In the November 2018 earthquake, an arm broke off the cross on our steeple! When we set about repairing the cross, along with some of the stucco that had worn over the last few decades, we soon discovered that rather than a simple stucco repair, we needed a full building resurfacing. We also discovered that we needed a complete replacement of the wooden bell support structure in the steeple – it had almost completely rotted away, creating a major safety hazard.
We have accepted the responsibility to correct these problems in full, providing the church with a safety and energy-efficiency upgrade. Half-measures or piecemeal repairs would only pass the expense and danger on to future generations, and we consider it our duty to care for God’s church now so that future generations can further God’s mission.
We are currently engaged in fundraising to meet the cost of these repairs. The bell support structure has been fixed and the bells are back in place. A new cross has also been lifted to the steeple. We rejoiced in this good work at our Steeple Dedication on October 27. Thanks to all who participated in that sweet celebration.
