In the November 2018 earthquake, an arm broke off the cross on our steeple! When we set about repairing the cross, along with some of the stucco that had worn over the last few decades, we soon discovered that rather than a simple stucco repair, we needed a full building resurfacing. We also discovered that we needed a complete replacement of the wooden bell support structure in the steeple – it had almost completely rotted away, creating a major safety hazard.
We have accepted the responsibility to correct these problems in full, providing the church with a safety and energy-efficiency upgrade. Half-measures or piecemeal repairs would only pass the expense and danger on to future generations, and we consider it our duty to care for God’s church now so that future generations can further God’s mission.
We are currently engaged in fundraising to meet the cost of these repairs. The bell support structure has been fixed and the bells are back in place. A new cross has also been lifted to the steeple. We rejoiced in this good work at our Steeple Dedication on October 27. Thanks to all who participated in that sweet celebration.
As part of our fundraising efforts, we offered people the opportunity to honor someone special by making a donation and we would engrave the name of their loved one on a plaque that will be placed high in the bell tower. The first printing is complete, but the opportunity is ongoing and we will run another printing in the spring.
Suggested donations are $100 per name on the main plaque, or $1,000 for a separate plaque which can include some words about your special person.
The name of your honoree will be lifted high above our city, and whenever you hear the bells ring on the quarter hour, their name will reverberate with the music.
